Internet Corporate for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced the availability of nine new gTLDs including .guru, .singles, and .clothing.
To be made available from January 2014 publicly, the new gTLDs are currently available to all those organizations and individuals with registered trademarks. The other gTLDs that have been announced on top of the above three are .bike, .ventures, .camera, .lighting, .voyage and .equipment.
ICANN is going to release new names at the rate of 10 per week and will be rolling out approximately 1,400 new gTLDs over the course of next few years. The Internet corporation is of the belief that the new gTLDs will allow consumers to find whatever they are looking for easily while allowing businesses to benefit from relevant online propositions.
Last month ICANN president of the Generic Domains Division, Akram Atallah, said that the expansion of domain name suffixes was the “biggest change to the internet since its inception.”
Icann has already started inviting applications from companies for names they would like to register and there have quite a few applications including .ferrari, and .bbc among others. There are about 700 generic names including .shop, .hotel and .site that have been set aside as well.
Just last week .london gTLD was announced. Businesses and individuals in the capital will be able to apply for domain names ending with .london suffix.
