BMW has released the BMW i3 all electric powered car. Having a major world player enter the market is sure to be a worry for eclectic vehicle pioneers, Tesla.
The entry price for the new BMW i3 is just $45,200 compared to the entry price to buy a Tesla S is $62,400. What will also be worrying Tesla is that this price is likely to drop with the huge investment that the German auto maker is making in the electric car field. The capability that the auto giant has to ramp up production with the coming demand for electric vehicles could leave Tesla in an expensive, lonely place in the market, in the not too distant future.
BMW is offering an Interesting sales pitch with the i3 by offering more range for more money. It is a bit like Apple offering different battery life options for the iPhone with the longer life being the most expensive. It is also like what Apple do, by offering the iPhone in a choice of memory capacity. Even though the difference in the cost of the extra memory does not justify the price difference, it is a good way of seeming to offer choice while driving up profits.
The new BWW i3 has a carbon fibre body shell to take advantage of the materials light weight. The i3 is however considerably slower in accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour than the Tesla Model S, completing it is 7 seconds compared to the Model S at 5.4 seconds.
As with many things in life, it is true that if you have more money, you can go further! The new BMW i3 proves this is true, in electric motoring, for the time being at least.
