Back in the far off days when a phone was just a device to talk on (and maybe the odd text message), hardware was king. The kings of the hardware then were Motorola and Nokia who between them had a stranglehold on the handset market. Times however have changed and it is no longer just a matter of making a device to call from. The mobile phone of today needs to do a whole lot more.
Unfortunately neither, Motorola or Nokia saw far enough ahead into the future of the market to develop an operating system of their own in a timely fashion to power their devices of the future. This led to both manufacturers being left behind in the handset race.
There is hope however for both Motorola and Nokia as they can now play on their strengths as hardware manufacturers and pick the operating system of their choice from other manufacturers. In fact, due to the change in market dynamics away from hardware based manufacturers leading the field to software based manufactures, the two companies are in the lucky position of being able to choose the operating system that they use in their devices dependant on the target market for their device as well as what is the current flavor of the month.
Nokia have recently announced the new Nokia 1020. Nokia decided to power the device with the latest version of Windows 8 Mobile as their latest attempt at clawing back market share in the handset market.
Motorola on the other hand, have teamed up with Google to use the Android Operating System, to power the Moto X. There are some leaks to suggest that the new device will feature a voice command system, similar to that used by Apple for Siri.
This could be an exciting time for the ex kings of the handset market.
