Motorola teased the world yesterday with the first official ad for the Moto X – one that didn’t offer any price or release date details, but called the Moto X “the first smartphone you can design yourself”.
So it seemed like after months of rumour-mongering we had our answer – the Moto X would indeed be customisable allowing each buyer to build their own ideal phone from scratch.
Sadly however this isn’t looking to be the case at all. In the ad, Motorola admitted that “some said it couldn’t be done” and in terms of the from-scratch-build Moto X we were expecting, ‘some’ were right on the money.
What customisation apparently means to Motorola is the ability to order a Moto X with a range of colour choices for the back-casing and the trim, along with the option for engraving if so wished.
Need we remind you that colour casings for about 99% of Smartphones have been on the market already for years, while Apple offer of engraving started a long time ago with its iPods.
So customisable the Moto X might be, but to call it “the first smartphone you can design yourself” is probably being a little creative with the truth.
Not that it’s all doom and gloom for the Moto X – as promised it will be the first of its kind to be designed and built in the good-old USofA. Motorola’s insistence on boasting its all-American glory on July 4th no doubt went down a treat across the pond, though how this holds much appeal for the rest of the world’s market remains to be seen.
I don’t want to get into a rut of Moto X-bashing here, but today’s new snippets only add further disappointment to a Smartphone that I’m already a bit let down with. No 1080p HD screen, no top-end specs and now none of the cool ‘build-your-own’ goodness we were expecting.
Let’s just hope when its release date rolls around it lands for a Nexus-esque low price, ideally with a new version of Android to sweeten the fast-souring deal.
It can’t be just me that’s feeling a bit short-changed…can it?
