Microsoft Windows 10 is now running on 5.2 per cent of desktops and laptops globally and has surpassed Mac OS X in just one month of its release, new stats have revealed.
According to NetMarketShare, Apple’s latest version of OS X, which was released last October, accounts for 4.8 per cent OS market share.
Windows 7 still seems to be leading the OS market running on 57.67 percent of desktops, followed inexplicably by Windows XP (12.14 per cent) and Windows 8.1 (11.39 per cent).
Microsoft’s new web browser, Edge, has garnered a 2 per cent share of the desktop browser market in August, although that still leaves it trailing behind other popular web browsers including Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox and Safari.
Microsoft began rolling out Windows 10 to Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users as a free upgrade for consumers and some business customers on July 29. The tech giant continues to roll out the free Windows 10 upgrade in waves.
Last month, Redmond claimed that Windows 10, which was made available as a free update for users of previous Windows 7 and 8 systems, had already been installed on over 75 million devices.
The company aims to see Windows 10 installed on 1 billion devices by 2018. A mobile version of Windows 10 is expected to be released sometime later this year.
NetMarketShare’s figures are based on data collected from visitors to more than 40,000 websites across the world.
