The origin of the Xbox One backwards compatibility hoax has been traced to 4Chan website. The original thread which sparked off the hoax and spread like wildfire through Twitter, Facebook and other sites has long been deleted. We have got a screenshot of the original message from where it all started (possibly).
Original Story
Microsoft’s Major Nelson has issued a warning against the step-by-step guides for making Xbox One backwards compatibility doing rounds on the internet stating that users may end up bricking their consoles if they perform these steps.
Both the recently released consoles – the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 – are incompatible with previous generation games and any attempt to make them compatible is definitely not a good option. A six-step tutorial is doing rounds of popular social networking sites including Facebook and Twitter that basically switches on the developer mode of Xbox One, which then results into constant reboots.
Larry Hryb, part of the Xbox One development team, warned through a tweet, “To be clear there is no way to make your Xbox One backwards compatible & performing steps to attempt this could make your console inoperable.”
The prank doing rounds on social sites is titled “Xbox 360 games will now be playable on your console”, and “Xbox 360 Backwards Compatibility Unlock”, however its origin is not yet known. It also isn’t known as to how many users have fallen for this hoax.
Microsoft wanted its Xbox One users to easily have access to some developer level functionalities of the console, because of which it incorporated features that would turn into a developer box without requirement of special hardware. However, that doesn’t mean that all developer level functionalities are available and it certainly doesn’t mean that the console would be backwards compatible.
One more reason they will not get any money from myself. Greedy turds, both company’s!
