Microsoft has dug out from the Internet graveyard one of it first websites that was published 20 years back and the remains gives an insight about the primitive era of Internet and web hosting.
Microsoft hosted the website in 1994, when web hosting was a luxury and only a few privileged companies did that on the World Wide Web. In that era, HTML was still at its infancy and web publishing was only evolving.
To celebrate its 20th anniversary on the web, the company dug that old website up and put it back online for people to see. So it is a unique opportunity for those who loves Internet archaeology to have a look how some of the websites looked during the Jurassic age of Internet, especially websites like Microsoft which has been the top ten visited websites for years.
Looking at the remains of the 1994 website of Microsoft it gives a sense of the simplicity in the design and texture of the site. It has a rather large “Microsoft” in the middle of a textured picture of some sort of a sunrise, probably behind a mountain and the links to its pages are placed on a textured background resembling somewhat of a strange galaxy!
If Microsoft’s idea at that time was to put up a website that looks futuristic, it must have received 5 stars with audience 20 years back, but now it looks like a Neanderthal man’s tool – but nonetheless fascinating!
