Microsoft has finally made it official that there Nokia Lumia branding will not be used for future devices, but instead will have Microsoft Lumia brand name on smartphones
The move, if not surprising is brow-raising, considering that Redmond still has a 10-year license to use the Nokia branding on basic mobile phones.
Tuula Rytilä, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Phones at Microsoft said “Microsoft will continue to sell Nokia-branded, entry-level category of phones, such as the Nokia 130,”…”We have licensed the Nokia brand for such devices.”
Earlier this week “Nokia’s existing phone websites and social network accounts will now be transitioned over to the Microsoft Lumia branding in the coming days.”
However, to confirm this news the former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop — who is now the head of Microsoft’s devices group (in April) said “The Nokia brand is available to Microsoft to use for its mobile phones products for a period of time, but Nokia as a brand will not be used for long going forward for smartphones.”
The future Lumia could come with a big screen display panel with ultra-thin bezels and slightly curved edges.
The software giant recently also revealed the statistics where the company sold 9.3 million Lumia Windows Phones in the most recent quarter, a small increase from the 8.8 million sold in the same period last year. And with this replacement in branding, Microsoft may face new challenges.
