Windows XP EOL date is approaching fast, but it seems that Microsoft’s efforts of moving customers away from the decade old operating system are not bearing fruits as it is still the second most used operating system with a 31.22 percent market share, while Windows 8 has failed to pickup and is still at a measly 6.66 percent market share.
According to latest report by Netmarketshare, Windows XP still holds the second place with over 31 percent share second to Windows 7 which holds 46.64 percent share. Windows 8 is just at 6.66 percent share which indicates that the new operating system hasn’t managed to attract as many users as Microsoft would have wanted owning to the huge marketing campaign surrounding Windows 8 and Windows 8.1
There have been multiple warnings from Microsoft as well as reports of hackers stockpiling on Windows XP Zero-days, but these haven’t had any major effect on operating system’s share as between September and October, Windows XP shed only 0.2 percent share.
A zero-day was discovered in Windows XP just a few days back and Microsoft has revealed that it is investigation the issue. Microsoft re-stressed after this discovery that hackers are patiently waiting for the April 8, 2014 deadline and they will start exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities through zero-day exploits.
