Microsoft has just rolled out the much awaited Lumia Cyan update bringing Windows Phone 8.1 to every Nokia Lumia handset.
Announcing the update, Microsoft said the Lumia Windows Phone 8 range of smartphones will receive Lumia Cyan software, the new Windows Phone 8.1 update and Lumia features upgrade as a part of the new update starting Tuesday.
The Lumia Cyan update will allow Windows phone users to add a third column of Live Tiles to their home screens, use their own photos as a background image behind Live Tiles and to further personalize their menu displays.
The update also brings in a centralized Action Centre for notifications and settings, an updated Internet Explorer 11 browser and the WordFlow Keyboard, similar to Swype, which lets users type by swiping their finger over letters on the keyboard.
Other features include improvements made to Nokia’s Camera – a more simplified UI with one-tap access to edit and share photo tools and new filters, full-resolution zooming and access to Creative Studio 6 from the Camera Roll, and Storyteller social-networking app. Enterprise features including VPN support and WiFi security have also been improvised.
The update also has something for the business users. Microsoft claims that Lumia users will now be able to access Office for Windows Phone, OneNote, Outlook, Skype and OneDrive. The update also brings in a “built-in mobile device management client” that would enable IT departments to secure and manage employees’ phones.
The Redmond’s virtual personal assistant, Cortana, is also making its way to Lumia phones running Windows Phone 8 with the update in the US. However, it is to be noted that UK Lumia users will have to wait until the end of the year.
The Lumia Cyan update is set to arrive on all Lumia Windows Phone 8 handsets over the coming weeks.
