MediaFire has upped the file-sharing ante by launching a desktop sync application as well as adding streaming support on its website.
Believed to have a registered userbase of over 30 million and 150 million monthly visitors, MediaFire is one of the most popular file-sharing services out there. MediaFire offers up to 50GB of free storage on its servers and this puts it directly in competition with services like Dropbox, Google Drive and Mega. A desktop syncing application is a logical step for the file-sharing service to stand a chance against its competitors.
The application, dubbed MediaFire Desktop, is available for both Mac and Windows users and users will be able to back up their files stored in their MediaFire account directly to their computers. Users will also be able to share files directly from their hard drive. All they have to do is put the files they want to share in MediaFire folder and share the link with their friends and family.
“Designed to make uploading, sharing, and managing files a breeze, MediaFire Desktop comes with the storage you need to share and store all of your digital stuff (up to 50 gigs for free) and the flexibility to accommodate even the largest of data users”, notes MediaFire in a blog post.
Further, to ensure that users get a more streamlined approach to file-sharing MediaFire has overhauled its website to offer automatic media file transcoding and streaming support for over 200 file formats which can be viewed directly from a web browser.
