Linus Torvalds released Linux 3.17-rc2 kernel on Monday rather than the usual Sunday release cycle partly owing to his presence at LinuxCon Chicago last week and partly because August 25 is the anniversary of the original Linux Announcement.
“So I deviated from my normal Sunday schedule partly because there wasn’t much there (I blame the KS and LinuxCon), but partly due to sentimental reasons: Aug 25 is the anniversary of the original Linux announcement (“Hello everybody out there using minix”), so it’s just a good day for release announcements”, noted Torvalds in the release announcement.
Torvalds added that the rc2 is small and wants things to remain in that way. But we anticipate that the size of the release candidate was small because the developers were busy with the two Linux conferences – LinuxCon and KS – and subsequent rcs will be bigger.
Linux 3.17-rc2 comprises of 60 per cent driver related updates and changes; 15 per cent file system updates; 10 per cent architecture updates; and remaining miscellaneous updates.
