Linus Torvalds has cut short the Linux 3.17 merge window by a day and released Linux 3.17-rc1 because of his travel plans.
“I’m going to be on a plane much of tomorrow, and am not really supportive of last-minute pull requests during the merge window anyway, so I’m closing the merge window one day early, and 3.17-rc1 is out there now”, said Torvalds in a mailing list announcement.

Detailing the changes in Linux 3.17, Torvalds notes that there are changes all over the place but is devoid of any huge architecture changes. About 75 per cent of the changes are related to drivers and the remaining comprises of architecture updates, changes to networking and filesystems among other things.
Torvalds noted that he expects the rc2 to be smaller considering that developers will be travelling for the Kernel summit.
