Japanese messenger app Line, which launched in India this July, has reached 10 million users milestone within three months, the company has confirmed. Line aims to increase its user base in India to 20 million users by the end of this year. The company has also roped in Katrina Kaif as the company’s brand ambassador for India.
Along with free messaging, the app also offers free voice calls, stickers and video and audio file sharing service. CEO of LINE Corporation, Akira Morikawa, in a press release said “India has overtaken Japan to become the country with the third largest number of smartphone users. It is only natural to anticipate further growth of the smartphone market in India, and we believe that it will become a vital territory as LINE expands into the global marketplace”.
Line has also entered into a partnership with Sony and as part of the agreement Line messenger app will come pre-installed on Sony’s Xperia Z1 and Xperia C handset. Line has also partnered with Bollywood movies like Krrish 3 and DHOOM:3 offering exclusive content access to all the app users. The company is also actively pursuing telecom operators in a bid to convince them to offer line users with some concessions or freebies.
Line which was launched in 2011 has around 230 million global users with more than 20 per cent Japanese user base. At present, Line is available in 55 countries with Indonesia, Spain, Taiwan and Thailand being the major markets. The growth that the company has witnessed in India is unparalleled claimed Line.
