Google’s updated Android distribution statistics reveal that Android 4.4 “KitKat” is currently the most popular version of the mobile OS.
According to the latest Android adoption figures, Android KitKat, version 4.4 of Google’s mobile operating system which debuted in October 2013, currently accounts for a market share of 39.1 per cent as against 33.9 percent in December.
The statistics has revealed that the three different versions of Android Jelly Bean still powers the greater part of Android devices, with the combined percentage of 46 per cent, down from 48.7 per cent last month. Android 4.1.x is seen on 19.2 per cent devices, Android 4.2.x on 20.3 per cent and Android 4.3 on 6.5 per cent devices.
Meanwhile, usage of older versions of Android has also fallen; Ice Cream Sandwich’s share is down, from 7.8 to 6.7 per cent, while Gingerbread has dipped from 9.8 per cent to 7.8 per cent. Froyo has slipped from 0.5 per cent to 0.4 per cent.
Interestingly, the latest version of the OS – Android 5.0 “Lollipop” – could not make its entry into Google’s adoption figures list this time.
Google notes on the Android Developer website that “any versions with less than 0.1 percent distribution are not shown”, indicating that almost ‘nobody’ is using Android 5.0 Lollipop.
