Jolla has announced the release of Sailfish OS 1.0 and with that the company is ready to go global.
Announcing the milestone, Jolla announced through a press release that users will soon be able to experience Sailfish OS by downloading the software and running it on smartphones running Android.
Since its initial launch in Finland through mobile operator DNA the Sailfish OS has received three major updates. A fourth update is slated for early March release and after that the mobile platform will ready for a commercial release globally.
“We’re very excited to announce this. We’ve been working hard together with our user community to make the user experience of the Jolla smartphone and Sailfish OS effortless and distinct”, said Marc Dillon, Co-Founder and COO of Jolla in a press release.
“We believe that Jolla now offers a truly viable option for all smartphone users. Naturally we are not stopping here, as we continue to provide monthly software updates to Jolla devices and Sailfish OS.”
Jolla describes Sailfish OS as a distinctive, gesture-based mobile operating system that provides effortless navigation as well as live multitasking. Another feature of Sailfish OS is that it not only supports native Sailfish OS apps, but also supports Android apps.
Sailfish OS powered smartphones are available online in all European countries, Norway and Switzerland for €399 while in Finland Jolla has managed to find other retailers in addition to DNA.
Downloadable Sailfish OS software is likely to be available in the first half of 2014 in a phased manned globally.
