When almost all auto manufacturers are investing heavily in driverless autonomous cars, there is atleast one company that feels that a lot more can be done for human automobile operators. Jaguar is working on a new 360° Urban Windshield which it claims will not only reduce accidents, but will also eliminate blindspots.
One of the most irritating and often dangerous aspects of driving a car is blindspots, which could lead to fatal accidents. To combat this, Jaguar is working on a new technology that will keep track of your surroundings through screens embedded in the B-pillar inside the car. These screens will display a live video feed captured by cameras fitted outside, giving you an unobstructed view of your surroundings.
The 360° Urban Windshield also incorporates a new technology dubbed ‘Ghost car’, will project a glowing blue car in front of the driver. Drivers will be able to follow them and take the best route. This ‘ghost’ car will be able to instruct drivers on when to take turns based on visible landmarks rather than road names, which could be sometimes hard to remember or spot.
The 360° Urban Windshield will also bring with it a new heads-up display that will highlight any risks including nearby pedestrians and cyclists in a bid to alert to driver thereby reducing the chances of an accident.
“Driving on city streets can be a stressful experience, but imagine being able to drive across town without having to look at road signs, or be distracted trying to locate a parking space as you drive by,” said Wolfgang Epple, the company’s director of research and technology.
Epple said that the company intends to provide all this information to drivers at their eye-line on a HUD so that the driver doesn’t need to seek out the information for themselves.
