A strange incident took place this Friday, when the iPhone of a middle-school female student in Kennebunk, Maine, suddenly caught fire in her pant’s back pocket while sitting in the classroom.
On Friday morning, while the eight-grader was attending a class with the device in her back pocket, she heard a strange pop sound and then immediately felt like her pants were burning. The girl was immediately rushed to the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford where she was treated for second-degree burns.
Jeffrey Rodman, the school principal, said “We definitely avoided something that could have been a lot worse.”
We’re very grateful the girl is OK and the quick response from the students and the staff minimised what potentially could have caused a lot more damage.”
The cause of the iPhone explosion is under investigation by the state Fire Marshall, Rodman added.
This is not the first time Apple products have made the news for combusting. Earlier in 2011, an iPhone 4 caught fire on an Australian flight and in 2013 a California man’s iPhone 4 caught fire while he was charging the handset in his home. A demo iPad also burst into flames last November.
Apple is yet to issue a statement about this incident.
