Huawei has joined the likes of Samsung and MediaTek after announcing its 28nm process based octa-core High Performance Mobile (HPM) processor. Huawei CEO Richard Yu broke the news about the octa-core chip through his Sina Weibo page, while also revealing a quad-core chip.
The octa-core HiSilicon K3V3 uses ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture wherein four cores are based on Cortex A-a5 and the other four cores are based on the Cortex-A7 chip. The A-15 cores will do the heavy lifting while the A-7 based cores will take care of other light-weight functions.
The quad core chip dubbed HiSilicon K3V2 Pro is based on ARM Cortex A-9 architecture and supports GSM/WCDMA/TD-SCDMA/TD-LTE and FDD-LTE modems.
We are not sure if the processors will be able to implement Heterogeneous Multi-Processing (HMP) allowing all the cores to take up different tasks. Yu also talked about a certain 64-bit processor in a third post; however, it was deleted soon after.
Huawei’s processor resembles that of Samsung’s Exynos 5– because of the two different cores that it employs. On the other hand MediaTek’s octa-core processor employs eight A7 cores.
