Huawei managed to create a stir in the smartphone market with its Ascend Mate last year with a 6.1-inch display and impressive enough screen; however, a recent leak that points to the possible Ascend Mate 2 is hardly that impressive.
According to latest pictures which emerged on Chinese microblogging site Weibo the new Ascend Mate 2 seems to feature a brushed metal casing with a 6.1-inch display. From that it can’t be told for sure whether the display will have a 720p or a 1080p resolution, but considering that Full HD is the norm, we would like to see 1080p display.
Previous rumours point to a possible 1.5 or 1.6GHz processor and 2GB RAM and it seems that in the processing department, Huawei isn’t going for something too fancy. However, these are just rumours and if we are to believe the TENNA filings (FCC equivalent in China) the Ascend Mate 2 will pack a 1.6 GHz quad-core CPU, a HiSilicon Kirin 910 SoC with Mali 450 GPU.
Sort of a letdown is the software that Huawei has chosen to flash on Ascend Mate 2. It is said that the phablet will run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and not Android 4.4 KitKat. There seems to be no plausible reason behind not going for latest Android goodies and if the smartphone is priced somewhere around £300, it would be a bit difficult to spare that sort of money for Android 4.2.2 powered smartphone.
