Hewlett-Packard is recalling 6 million computer power cords over potential fire and burn risks after it has received 29 reports of the cords melting or charring – two resulting in minor burns and 13 in minor property damages, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
The power cord in question model ‘LS-15’ were distributed with Hewlett-Packard and Compaq notebook and mini notebook computers as well as with the AC adapter-powered accessories such as docking stations sold online and in stores world-wide from September 2010 through June 2012.
HP said certain power cords shipped with notebook PC products and AC adapter accessories may pose a risk of a fire and burn hazard to customers. The company said it has initiated the recall program as part of its commitment to provide the highest quality of service to the notebook customers.
The notebook maker has asked customers to validate the power cord shipped with their notebook PC or purchased with an accessory, or as a spare to find out if they are eligible to receive a free replacement.
The CPSC in its recall notice has requested customers to immediately stop using and unplug the recalled power cords as caution. They can, however, still continue to use the computer on battery power, the regulator said.
The recall affects nearly 5.6 million power cords in the United States and 446,700 in Canada.
