HP has revealed that it will be issuing a clarification on the recent firmware update policy change after some HP customers and third party maintenance contractors criticised HP for jeopardising security of users’ systems.
The change to firmware update policy was announced by Mary McCoy Vice President, HP Servers – Support through a blog post wherein she noted that customers will have to have either a valid warranty or a support agreement or Care Pack Service in order to receive firmware updates for their servers.
McCoy acknowledged that the policy update is a change in the manner in which HP has conducted business in the past but stressed that the change “aligns with industry best practices and is the right decision for our customers and partners.”
The change invoked criticism from HP’s customers who took to Reddit and other social media platforms including Twitter to voice their concerns.
According to The Wall Street Journal, HP will soon be updating its blog post to reflect on what it said in the actual policy. “We understand how important safety and security firmware updates are, and will continue to provides those updates to all users,” said the spokeswoman in an emailed statement to WSJ.
