Acer announced today its C720 Chromebook which will be pitched directly against HP’s Chromebook 11 which was unveiled yesterday signaling towards a possible price war.
The C720 first surfaced at the IDF 2013, but wasn’t detailed at the time by either Acer or Google. It seems that today’s launch has been timed pretty well considering HP’s announcement yesterday.
Acer has packed the C720 with Intel Haswell based Celeron 2955U processor, 11.6-inch HD screen, 4GB DDR3L RAM, 16GB solid state drive, 100GB online storage (Google Drive), HD webcam, 1xUSB 3.0 and 1xUSB 2.0 ports, HDMI slot, and an SD card reader. Comparing the specification of the C720 with that of the Chromebook 11, it seems that Acer may have an edge in terms of the processor and RAM. HP has opted for ARM based Exynos processor as compared to x86 used by Acer.
Acer is banking on Haswell’s power efficient architecture and claims that the C720 boasts of 8.5 hours of battery life. According to Acer the C720 is about 30 percent slimmer than its predecessor C70 at 0.75-inches thickness and weights just over 2.70 pounds.
Acer has priced its Chromebook at $249.99 and US customers can start pre-ordering one through either Amazon.com or BestBuy.com. The company hasn’t detailed the shipping dates though.
According to reports HP and Toshiba also plan to launch an x86 Chromebook that will be launched soon. It seems that Google is trying to rope in as many OEM partners as possible to expand its Chrome OS market share.
