Movie-lovers will be restricted from using their Google Glass device while watching movies in theatres in the US.
The US Motion Picture Association of America and the National Association of Theatre Owners have come together to ban the use of Google Glass and other wearable devices inside movie theatres in a bid to take on illegal recording and movie piracy.
“[We] have a long history of welcoming technological advances and recognise the strong consumer interest in smartphones and wearable devices,” the duo said in a joint statement.
“As part of our continued efforts to ensure movies are not recorded in theatres, however, we maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward using any recording device while movies are being shown.
“As has been our long-standing policy, all phones must be silenced and other recording devices, including wearable devices, must be turned off and put away at show time.”
The two associations, representing the six major Hollywood studios and some 32,000 of America’s 39,000 movie screens, announced Wednesday that anyone found failing to comply with their so-called zero-tolerance policy toward recording device usage will be asked to leave the theater. If theatre owners suspect of any sort of video recording, they may also call out for the law enforcement to take over.
“Individuals who fail or refuse to put the recording devices away may be asked to leave, the statement added.
“If theater managers have indications that illegal recording activity is taking place, they will alert law enforcement authorities when appropriate, who will determine what further action should be taken.”
Google Glass has already been banned from use in UK theaters.
