Some of the top FIFA YouTubers were at the receiving end of an EA Origins account theft attack which saw attackers siphon off their hard earned in-game currency, and selling off their top notch players.
MattHDGamer, W2S, NepentheZ, AnEsonGib, Nick28T, and Bateson87 are the YouTubers who were at the receiving end of the attack. Between them these YouTubers have a whopping 9.8 million followers.
It seems that the attack was more of a social engineering attack wherein attackers managed to convince EA officials to change the email address of these YouTubers to an email address that they had control over. Matthew Craig aka MattHDGamer revealed in an interview with BBC that on top of his account as many as 9 other accounts were compromised.
However, soon after each of these account holders contacted EA and revealed about the hack, their accounts were handed over back to them. Also, EA added a few more security measures to ensure greater security of the accounts.
“We encourage all Fifa players to secure their accounts with authentication and verification steps, which we outline on our help and our product sites”, said EA spokesperson. “We are consistently working through our customer experience teams to secure accounts and make sure players are educated when account compromises are made.”
