The original GTA designer, Michael Dailly, is working on a 3D version of the first GTA game, which was released way back 1997.
The original game had a top-down view perspective; however, the maps were still 3D giving users the idea of how tall the buildings were even in a 2D representation. Dailly is using YoYo Games’ GameMaker Studio package to remake the 3D version of the game. The remake runs at 60 fps (frames per second), which is a whole lot better as compared to the original version.
Dailly has designed and created the game’s primitive builder system and the map loader right from scratch. Currently the rendering engine runs on “plugin-free” Web technologies including WebGL and HTML5.
The developer has posted screenshots showing the game’s progress on his twitter account. As the original rights of the game still rests with Rockstar, the designer has no plans to release the 3D version of GTA publicly, rather he will be releasing the 3D game engine without the original game’s maps or textures to protect himself from getting sued.
Michael Dailly is presently working as the head of development at YoYo Games, the same company which produces GameMaker: Studio. The GameMaker Studio package serves as a games creation tool by content creators without extensive programming knowledge.
The latest addition to the Grand Theft Auto series is Grand Theft Auto V which was released in September this year and broke several Guinness World Records including the record for fastest entertainment game to gross $1 billion.
