Sundar Pichai, Google’s Senior Vice President of Android, Apps and Chrome, on Sunday announced that the search engine giant will soon be releasing an Android Software Developer Kit (SDK) specifically for wearable devices within two two weeks.
While Speaking at SXSW 2014 Pichai said that Android’s new SDK will aid developers in creating apps for smart watches, fitness bands and other wearable devices. Without just limiting the kit to watches or smartbands, the company wants developers to take advantage of current and emerging sensor technology and create a new arm for Android beyond smartphones and tablet using the new SDK.
“In two weeks we are launching the first developer SDK for Android. That will lay out the vision for developers in how we see this market working,” Pichai said. He didn’t say if the SDK launch will be accompanied by a Google branded wearable.
When asked whether Google has plans to incorporate Android with Nest devices, Pichai replied that the company hopes to develop a set of common protocols in future that will allow different devices to work together.
He hinted that Nest could be a part of the plan and said: “We are thinking hard about the layer which will connect all these devices together”.
“That’s something we will work hard for”.
The Android SDK announcement comes ahead of Google’s I/O developer’s conference in June, where the company is likely to launch its own new smartwatch.
