New reports suggest Google is working on a new Android version dubbed Android M, that would be built directly into cars, letting drivers enjoy Internet benefits without even plugging in their smartphones.
According to sources who spoke with Reuters, the alleged Google Android version will do away with the need to plug a smartphone into the infotainment center’s USB to access internet. Unlike Google’s current Android Auto software which requires a phone to be plugged into a compatible car with a built-in screen to access internet, Android M would allow access to Google Maps, streaming music and other apps independently.
“With embedded it’s always on, always there. You don’t have to depend on your phone being there and on,” Reuters noted.
Furthermore, Android M will launch as soon as the driver switches on the ignition which means they won’t have to wait for 30 seconds for the operating system to start up, as is the case with existing Android Auto software.
As per the report, the updated Android Auto version will include “all the features of the Internet,” such as streaming music and GPS navigation as well as the ability to use the car’s sensors (like GPS) to feed information about consumers’ driving habits to advertisers.
The sources also reported that Google’ Android M won’t see a launch until next year.
The search engine giant is yet to officially announce details or a timeframe for the new Android version.
