HTC is likely having second thoughts over its said decision of quitting the tablet making business nearly after 3 years, as it is reportedly partnering with Google to make Nexus 9, claims a new report.
Google handpicks its partners every time to make the Nexus line of devices and this time, it is HTC, as its policy is to prevent dominancy in the market and provide more opportunities for all players, according to sources.
Earlier this year, in the lawsuit filed by Nvidia against Qualcomm and Samsung for the use of Tegra K1 chips, it was mentioned that HTC’s upcoming Nexus 9 will carry the same chip and it was later changed by the company on September 11. In addition to this, company sources with knowledge of the matter spoke to the Wall Street Journal of the company’s developments.
They also said that HTC’s officials have been flying to Google Headquarters often recently from their operational base Taiwan to plan the specs of the upcoming device. Nvidia’s filing says that it will be announced in the third quarter of 2014 and so the formal announcement might be made sooner, say some sources. However, both companies have declined to comment on it.
Google has also not said anything about why it would choose HTC while there are other players in the field like Samsung which has had a good track record of tablets like Nexus 10. Details about the specifications of the device are not available yet and if it has the Tegra K1 chip as said in Nvidia’s statement, it might be a high end device like the Nexus 10 by Samsung.
Although Google did not comment on this bit of rumour, it has said that the Android platform is vibrant and there is more room for other partners to innovate.
