Recent reports claim Google is working on an 8.9-inch tablet with resolution greater than 2K and will be released later this year.
According to DigiTimes Google’s new 8.9-inch Nexus tablet will feature Android 5.0 operating system that is expected to be unveiled at the I/O developer conference in June.
This is not the first time reports of a larger-screened tablet from Google have emerged and if true, it means that Google has already shifted focus from 7-inch tablets to relatively big-screened tablets where the competition is not so intense.
Market research firm IHS Technology has also confirmed it with CNET that a “high-performance” tablet with an 8.9-inch display from Google is in the works.
“Volume production is expected to start in July or August,” Rhoda Alexander, director tablet and monitor research at IHS Technology said. “The expectation is [that] this will be a lower volume product, carrying a premium price tag to support the specifications.”
Google isn’t likely to stick with LG or Samsung with its 8.9-inch tablet and it will be Taiwanese manufacturer HTC lending its the manufacturing might to Mountain View.
While nothing is official, the upcoming tablet is expected to pack top-end features and specifications. With the Google’s previous launch schedules, the new tablet is expected to debut in July as the Nexus 7 was launched last year.
It is expected that Nexus 8.9 will retail at around $299.
