Amazon released an update to its Fire OS – version 3.1 – for its Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX tablets.
Slated to hit customer’s devices over the course of next few weeks in the form of over-the-air update, the Fire OS 3.1 brings with it quite a few new features including enterprise support, wireless printing, deep integration with Goodreads – an online reading community, second screen capabilities, Cloud Collections among others.
Goodreads was acquired by Amazon earlier in March and thanks to the deep integration in Kindle Fire OS 3.1, you won’t have to leave the book to open the Goodreads app. You can capture and share quotes directly from within the book and share them with your friends; see what they are reading; and even add books to a “want to read” shelf. You can share the ratings and review of the books that you have just finished on Goodreads.
With Cloud Collections, you can organize your apps, books, magazines, and newspapers into customized collections and using Amazon’s Whispersync technology you can sync these collections across all your Kindle devices and reading apps.
Second screen will let you “fling TV shows and movies from your tablet to your big-screen TV,” said Amazon said. For now Kindle Fire HD and HDX owners can use this second screen feature with PlayStation 3 and Samsung TVs, but Amazon has promised that it will expand the feature to PlayStation 4 this year itself.
Amazon has ensured that business users aren’t left out and the Fire OS 3.1 update brings with it ability to connect to secure enterprise Wi-Fi networks; support for organization’s native VPN client and native SCEP (Simple Certificate Exchange Protocol) client; device management APIs allowing for integration with existing mobile device management systems among other features.
Those who can’t wait for the over-the-air update can head on to Amazon’s website to download the update and install it manually.
