Samsung is expected to unveil its latest flagship Galaxy S5 at the Mobile World Congress 2014, but just before there SamMobile is claiming to “confirm” that the new smartphone will be equipped with a fingerprint scanner and that too on the home button and not on the entire display as rumoured previously.
According to the publication’s report, citing insider sources, the South Korean handset maker has implemented the fingerprint sensor into the Galaxy S5’s home button just as the one in Apple’s iPhone 5S.
The sensor will work in a swipe manner, meaning that a user will have to vertically swipe their finger at medium speed. The user’s finger should be completely flat and scanned from base to tip in order to get the fingerprint properly registered. Another important thing to be noted is that the fingerprint sensor is sensitive to moisture, so users should make sure that their finger is completely dry before scanning it.
According to SamMobile, users will be allowed to register eight fingerprints in total “and assign each fingerprint a different task or use it as an app shortcut, but at least one fingerprint must be used to unlock the device”. Users will also be able to use the sensor to open and close personal and private folders, as well as hide apps, widgets and private content.
Users will be able to verify their Samsung account using their fingerprint and will also be able to sign into different websites, without needing to enter their username or password ever again. Other security methods, like pattern unlock or security PIN will also reportedly be available for users.
