Facebook has rolled out a new feature dubbed “On This Day” which will allow users to recall previous “memories” that were logged onto the social networking website on a given date.
The new “On This Day” feature, as the name suggests, will let Facebook users view a past feed of posts made on the social site on a given date in the previous years, including photos, shares and posts one shared or had been tagged in.
“Today we’re announcing On This Day, a new way to look back at things you have shared and posts you’ve been tagged in on Facebook. Only you can see your On This Day page,” Facebook product manager Jonathan Gheller noted in a blog post announcing the new feature on Tuesday.
“On This Day shows content from this date in the past. For example, you might see past status updates, photos, posts from friends and other things you’ve shared or been tagged in – from one year ago, two years ago, and so on. Only you will see this content unless you decide to share it with your friends.”
In order to view the nostalgic posts, Facebook users can click on the On This Day bookmark, search for “On This Day,” or visit facebook.com/onthisday. Users can also subscribe to notifications to get timely reminders for new pictures and posts. They can also edit and delete old posts, or share memories with friends.
This time Facebook is way more careful as it is taking precautions to ensure that the nostalgia it induces does not hurt the user. As precaution, it won’t show posts of deceased loved ones or ex-partners.
The new feature will be rolled out to users globally on both Web and mobile in the next few days.
