Facebook has confirmed that Tuesday outage was not the result of any hacking attack rather it was due to an internal fault.
The Tuesday outage that affected the world’s most popular social networking site Facebook, its photo-sharing site Instagram, Tinder, AOL Instant Messenger, and Hipchat started around 0600 GMT and lasted for up to an hour.
Users in the United States and many countries in Asia and Europe on Tuesday reported that they were unable to log on to Facebook and Instagram websites as well as corresponding mobile apps including Facebook and Facebook Messenger. They were greeted with the message: “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on it and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can.”
Soon after the attack hacker group “Lizard Squad” posted messages on Tweeter claiming that it was behind an attack that temporarily blocked several major web sites, including Facebook and Instagram.
“Facebook, Instagram, Tinder, AIM, Hipchat #offline #LizardSquad” a tweet on the hacker group’s Twitter account read.
However, Facebook was quick enough to release a statement explaining that the disruption was caused by a technical foul up it made and wasn’t a cyberattack.
“This was not the result of a third party attack,” Facebook said in a statement after its services were restored.
The outage “occurred after we introduced a change that affected our configuration systems,” it added.
