Facebook on Wednesday rolled out a new video-focused app dubbed ‘Riff’ which will let users create videos collaboratively.
The free to download Riff app allows users to log into Facebook and record a 20 second clip offering instructions for friends on the theme. The video will show up in the Riff feed of the user’s friends who can then add to the clip with their own interpretation if they wish, and send it along to their friends. There’s no cap on the number of people who can participate.
“Our hunch was that if you could make videos collaboratively, the creative process would be more fun,” Josh Miller, a project manager at Facebook, said in a blog post announcing the new app as well as sharing an example of Riff in action.
As there are no uploading tools available, videos to be shared must be shot within the Riff app. Facebook has also removed the ability to comment directly on Riff videos from within the app. This has been done to encourage more and more people to contribute their own video to a friend’s Riff. The only way for the users to interact with the video is to add their own clip. A video creator will have the option to remove any added clips.
Furthermore, users can also share their Riff videos on Facebook, where they can comment on them.
Riff is the latest from Facebook’s Creative Labs group, which has also produced apps like Groups, Mentions, Paper, Rooms and Slingshot.
Riff is available for both Android and iOS starting Wednesday.
