Facebook has announced that it has hit the 100 million user milestone in India, the second country after US to have reached the 100 million mark.
The company claimed its Indian user base has grown huge since setting up its first office in Hyderabad, India in 2010. The social networking site had just 8 million users from the country at the time.
Facebook claims that 84 million of its 100 million users in India access the social networking site from their mobile devices. Late last month, Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the social network has around 1 billion monthly active users on mobile.
“Today, we have more than 100 million people who access Facebook actively in India each month,” Kevin D’Souza, Facebook India Head of Growth & Mobile Partnerships, said.
D’Souza said that Facebook is moving ahead with the mission of giving people the power to share and to make the world more open and connected.
“We recently announced Internet.org, a global partnership with the goal of connecting the next 5 billion people around the world, to make the same access and opportunity available to everyone,” D’Souza said.
“It is with this in mind that we look towards like-minded partners who want to innovate and share the same vision as us to understand better how Internet access can be increased to reach millions more people across India.”
Facebook India, as part of its Mobile First initiative launched last year, has partnered up with Airtel in December to offer free Facebook access on the mobile phones, with the app available in nine regional languages.
The social giant has also established partnerships with 2G and 3G data providers like Reliance, Idea , Aircel to offer free or reduced-cost access to the social network as well as free access on Nokia Asha mobile devices.
