With Transport for London (TfL) pushing for more contactless payments, EE has made a move to make available an app dubbed Cash on Tap which lets customers to pay using their smartphones.
Paying using a mobile app could help save a lot of time for passengers. However, TfL has said that smartphone payment systems have been working slow resulting in passengers having to wait longer than expected to make payments.
EE Chief Consumer Marketing officer Pippa Dunn said that London’s buses are used more than all the bus services in other areas on Britain combined, which makes it crucial to devise a system that will process payments faster and this is the reason behind EE making a mobile app which can make contactless payments. Cash on Tap gives customers the ability to pay without waiting in a queue.
The app will be functional on all Android phones with NFC support. Although NFC is one of the latest advancements in technology, some of the latest smartphones including HTC One M8, LG G3, etc are still waiting to get NFC support which is expected to come before the end of the year.
The app will work similar to the Oyster card and the daily and weekly payment caps can also be maintained to spend within the budget of the user.
Transport for London network is encouraging contactless payment on its London Underground, DLR and London Overground buses and the network is expecting to make all payments completely contactless sometime in September as it reports only a mere of 1 percent bus journeys to be paid using cash. TfL also noted that the cash-less scheme will save over £130m in the next 9 years.
