Dropbox is adding a range of new admin and security features including full-text search capabilities, view-only permissions for shared folders, addition of passwords and expiry for shared links, improved document preview among other things in a bid to appeal to more Enterprises.
According to recent stats, over 4 million businesses across the globe use its cloud storage service, but only 80,000 companies are actually paying for Dropbox for Business. The company hopes that the range of new features bound for the service will see increased adoption.
First feature heading to Dropbox for Business is the ability to set view-only permissions for shared folders allowing owners to fully control how the contents of their folders are used. Further, the service will also get passwords and expiration for shared links allowing owners to add an extra layer of security for their shared resources.
Currently the search function is limited to querying file names, but this will soon change as Dropbox for Business will soon get full-text search capabilities.
The cloud storage company is also upgrading its Android app by incorporating improved Microsoft Office document preview capabilities. Dropbox for Business users will now be able to check the file without downloading it.
Developers are also set to gain two new APIs (application programming interfaces) – the Shared Folder API and the Document Preview API.
