Dropbox has acquired Zulip, a workplace chat service startup. The news was confirmed through an email sent out by Zulip to its users on Monday.
The email read: “We have some news for you, but you gotta keep it secret. Can you do that? Alright, sweet.”
“Here’s the deal: Dropbox is acquiring Zulip. We’re incredibly excited about working with an awesome group of people on a problem with huge scale, at a company that’s as passionate as we are about helping people work together efficiently.”
The chat messaging startup also confirmed that the deal won’t have any effect on its working and that its major focus would be its integration with Dropbox.
The San Francisco-based startup, which is still testing out its applications in a private beta phase, is founded by ex-Oracle employees Jeff Arnold, Waseem Daher, Jessica McKellar, Tim Abbott and others.
Zulip has developed a suite of applications for Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android already. The chat service allows people in the workplace to chat with one another with messages appearing in a stream.
It also offers standard messaging and chat app features like drag-and-drop file uploads, image pasting, group private messages, audible notifications and missed-message emails.
When asked about the acquisition, Dropbox responded saying that “We have nothing further to share at this time.”
Official announcement of the deal is expected to take place in the coming few weeks.
