Sequel to the 1996 hit Trainspotting has been confirmed by Danny Boyle with an affirmation that Trainspotting 2 will include all members of the original cast including Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller and Ewan Bremner.
The 58-year-old director confirmed to Deadline that Trainspotting 2 is definitely a go, but it all depends on the availability of the original stars. Boyle added that McGregor, Carlyle, Miller and Bremner have all confirmed their desire to do Trainspotting 2.
The confirmation by Boyle hints at a possible things might now be OK between the director and McGregor who have had a public fallout after the launch of Trainspotting.
One of the reasons that we believe Boyle said that the timing depends on the availability of the original stars is that Miller is very busy with his work as Sherlock Holmes in CBS’ hit series ‘Elementary’, and Carlyle on the other hand has a packed schedule with his role as Mr. Gold / Rumpelstiltskin in ABC’s ‘Once Upon a Time’. The other two – McGregor and Bremner are busy with their respective pre-productions for American Pastoral and The Devil You Know.
Trainspotting 2 is being written by John Hodge, who is famous for his work A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach and Trance.
There are lots of expectations from Trainspotting 2 considering that the original movie went onto earn the title of ‘a modern classic’ and was pegged as one of the defining movies of the ‘90s. Shot in Glasgow and made over seven weeks in early 1995 with a budget of just $2 million, the movie raked over $72 million worldwide.
As far as the storyline goes, Miller’s Sick Boy heads back to Edinburgh to direct a porn movie, and calls on McGregor’s Renton for help. However, things get complicated when Begbie, played by Carlyle, is released from prison, and Spud, played by Bremner, tries to get Begbie to kill him so his wife can get the insurance money.
