[Update: The SSL certificate was renewed hours later. Navigating to the site now doesn’t throw the SSL error any more.]
In what can be dubbed as a rather ‘rookie’ mistake administrators at content.ad have forgotten to renew their SSL certificate because of which users are being served with a “your connection is not private error message” when visiting the site and checking for reports.
Content.ad is one of the leading content monetisation platforms like Taboola and Outbrain. Content.ad distributes high-paying premium content that doesn’t look or feel like advertising and delivers engaged visitors to websites. The site is used by thousands of publishers is serves nearly 5 billion content recommendations per month.
According to the SSL certificate root chain, it has been issued by GoDaddy and it seems that the administrators have to renew the certificate as it expired over this weekend (April 12, 2015).
SSL certificates are known to provide a strong layer of security specifically for communications over the web making eavesdropping impossible.
We hope Content.ad administrators will act upon this and take necessary actions.
