Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects hundreds of million of men globally and now a new research claims to have found the means to reduce the risk of this condition by as much as 42 per cent.
According to researchers from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), drinking just two to three cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of ED later on in life.
The study, which is published in PLOS ONE, states that men who consume 85 and 170 milligrams of caffeine a day were 42 per cent less likely to report ED, while those who drank between 171 and 303 milligrams of caffeine a day were 39 per cent less likely to report ED compared to those who drank zero to seven milligrams a day.
The researchers reveal in their paper that the aims of this study were to investigate the association of caffeine intake and caffeinated beverages with ED, and to compare whether these associations vary among overweight/obese, hypertensive and diabetic men in a nationally representative sample of the US adult population.
Researchers reveal that their study revealed that ED risk is lowered even in case of men who were overweight, obese and hypertensive. However, their tests reveal that risk of ED didn’t decrease in case of men with diabetes.
“Diabetes is one of the strongest risk factors for ED, so this was not surprising,” said David S. Lopez, Dr.P.H., M.P.H., lead author and assistant professor at UTHealth School of Public Health.
According to researchers, caffeine triggers a series of pharmacological effects that lead to the relaxation of the penile helicine arteries and the cavernous smooth muscle that lines cavernosal spaces, thus increasing penile blood flow.
