BMW, the German car giant and maker of some of the most technically innovative cars ever products, has followed up on the concept electric cars that it has developed, to release the BMW i3 in three weeks time. Details have been scant about the car but BMW have just now released some more details about the car.
The i3 is a five-door hatchback, powered by a 170 hp/125 kilowatt motor that will propel the car from o to 60 mph in “approximately 7 seconds” according to the release. This is a pretty good number when combined with the 0 to 35 mph figure of 3.5 seconds.
The release of the more important numbers, the all-important range of the car, the company has been similarly vague. Stating that the car will take you “80 to 100 miles’ on one charge. They do say however that in ‘Eco Pro” mode this will improve by up to 12 percent, however what affect this setting has on the traffic light dash is not clear.
BMW have also gone to great pains to high light their regenerative braking system that charges the batteries and how the car will go into “Coasting” mode to conserve the batteries.
If you are still not convinced that the new i3 will actually get you to work at back, with a drag race at every light, BMW will offer the ‘range extender’. An engine. Yes, a 650cc gasoline engine, which will take the worry of being stranded in the middle of nowhere away. We could perhaps see many BMW drivers, moving to the new system in the months to come.
