BBM, although has had a slow phase, seems to be picking up pace after going multi-platform as the number of active monthly users has increased to 91 million.
What was 85 million users a year ago has increased to 91 million this year and it was revealed during the Q2 fiscal 2015 earnings call. During the call, BlackBerry CEO John Chen revealed that the messenger app has received 6 million more users during the year.
Although the messenger was launched well ahead of other messengers currently popular among users, it lost its glory when the company’s products generally lost to rivals. However, BlackBerry has made a strong comeback and has a new strategy now with more focus on security targeting enterprise and government customers mostly.
It is also said that the introduction of BBM Protected and BBM Money boosted the user portfolio. A small number of users might have also joined the platform attracted by the inclusion of stickers. In addition, the company has made the app available for Windows users too.
BBM Protected is a secure platform protecting the messages shared between BlackBerry devices using FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic library.
Currently, the app is available only for BlackBerry users and the company is expected to make it available for iOS and Android users too, in the near future.
BBM Money is a peer-to-peer money transfer service which lets users create a mobile money account and make payments to contacts and transfer money to others.
With BlackBerry Passport getting a warm welcome in the market, it is expected that the app will have more users in the near future.
