Matt Mullenweg, founder of the blogging platform, WordPress, is stepping up to become the new chief executive officer of Automattic.
Mullenweg will be replacing Toni Schneider, the company’s current CEO. Schneider, who joined Automattic in 2006 when it was just few months old establishment, continued to hold the position for eight long years. Now Schneider will continue to work in the company as an adviser.
Mullenweg in his blog post wrote that Schneider is “going to focus on some of Automattic’s new products, and I’m going to take on the role of CEO.”
“Internally this isn’t a big change as our roles have always been quite fluid, and I’ve had some recent practice filling in for him for a few months last year when he was on sabbatical”, he added.
Mullenweg, who believes that a company should not be run by people in their twenties, now finds himself sufficiently old enough to take up the prestigious position as he has grown to be thirty now. He joked “Besides, it’s obvious that no one in their 20s should run a company,” and “They think they know everything, a fact I can now say with complete confidence now that I’m 30-and-two-days old.”
WordPress under Schneider’s leadership has grown to host around more than 17 million blogs, generating approximately 12.9 billion page views per month with the publishing platform running 21 percent of all websites on the web.
