ASDA has confirmed that it is actively ‘looking into’ launching its own branded tablet in a bid to imitate the success of its competitors like Tesco and Aldi.
Tablets have found a place for themselves in the must have gadget list and budget-friendly tablets are definitely ‘in’. Tesco managed to garner noticeable attention through its Hudl tablet and even managed to sell well over 300,000 units in a few months.
Aldi launched its own budget Android tablet dubbed Lifetab in collaboration with Medion and the supermarket chain sold out every piece of its initial inventory within 24 hours. Argos too has joined the bandwagon with its own branded MyTablet, which has also managed to find quite a few takers.
ASDA has revealed that quick tablet launches by its competitors has forced it to look into the tablet segment. Some have jumped in without giving it too much thought and didn’t perform well said ASDA Category Director for Electronics Ayaz Alam.
“We are not about to make the same mistake. We will make sure we launch with great quality and great value,” Alam said reports MarketingWeek. Alam hasn’t provided any concrete information about what market segment will ASDA target, what kind of specifications the company is looking at and what could be the price point?
ASDA may launch its tablets under the Polaroid brand, which it is already using to sell DAB radios. The fact the company is still ‘looking into’ the idea of an own branded tablet means that it won’t be launching a tablet any time soon – highly unlikely for Christmas at the least.
