Imagination Technologies, on Thursday, announced extension of its licensing agreement with Apple.
Although the financial details of the deal are yet to be disclosed, the chip designer confirmed that the deal will be a multi-year and multi-use agreement that will offer Apple an access to the company’s PowerVR graphics and video hardware.
The agreement will see the company’s graphic processors in Apple’s future iPhones and iPads including the iPhone 6 and the firm’s next generation iPads.
The announcement also confirms that Apple isn’t planning to develop its own graphic chips, at least not for a few years laying to rest rumors that the iPad maker is planning to develop in-house graphics in collaboration with British chip designer ARM.
A media release states that as per the licensing agreement, Imagination will be paid ongoing royalty fees and revenues on shipment of Apple chips that incorporate Imagination’s IP.
The British firm undoubtedly will be very pleased with the decision as Apple, which is its biggest customer accounting for more than 30 percent of the chip designing firm’s revenue, has decided to extend the licensing agreement.
Imagination also recently launched its improved Series6XT PowerVR GPUs, which will be replacing the company’s current Series6 graphics used in Apple’s A7 chipset. According to the company, the new and improved GPU chips will offer a 50 percent performance increase over the current generation cores. The technology is expected to surface in devices in 2015.
