Apple has confirmed that a limited set of iPhone 5S handsets are affected by battery issues resulting out of manufacturing defect and that it will provide replacements to all those affected by the issue.
Apple spokesperson Teresa Brewer confirmed to The New York Times that a “manufacturing issue” has come to light “that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life.” Brewer said that the issue only affects “very limited number of iPhone 5s devices” and that Apple has started reached out to all those who are affected by the issue “and will provide them with a replacement phone.”
Apple has failed to confirm the exact number of affected handset, but the ‘very limited number of iPhone 5S’ indicates that the issue may not be widespread and only a few thousand smartphones may be affected.
A quick search on Apple forums does bring up hundreds of posts with user complaining that the battery of iPhone 5S drains out even when not in use or is in an idle state. Some have even claimed that the battery doesn’t last longer than 5 hours and the iPhone 5S needs to be charged as many as three times in a single day even on moderate usage.
This is not the first time Apple has had issues related to faulty batteries. There have been battery drain issues in previous versions of the iPhones and even some laptops.
