Amazon is currently working on a new service called ‘Unlocked’ which aims to offer users free access to a large number of paid apps and games.
According to internal Amazon documents obtained by TechCrunch, Amazon’s new service dubbed “Amazon Unlocked” will let users download a wide range of paid apps, including in-app purchases, for free. The technology news website describes it as Amazon Prime for apps.
“Introducing Amazon Unlocked for Apps & Games,” Amazon noted introducing the new service.
“Paid apps and in-app purchasing now completely FREE from Amazon.”
The leaked presentation slides obtained by TechCrunch suggest Amazon is already working with Monument Valley developers ustwo and Sonic Dash developer Sega America. Other non-gaming apps listed in the slides include OfficeSuite 8 + PDF Converter and Ultimate Guitar Tabs & Chords.
The presentation slides, however, does not give out any hints as to when the new service will be rolled out and how much it would cost.
It seems like the internet retail giant’s main motive behind launching the new service is to make consumers spend more time in the Amazon Appstore rather than Google’s own Play Store.
Amazon is yet to comment on the report.
