Online retailing giant Amazon is all set to expand its UK workforce, adding 1,000 permanent jobs at distribution centers across the country over the coming months.
Announcing the job additions, John Tagawa, the director of UK operations at Amazon, said “Over the past two years, we have added well in excess of 2,000 new employees to our workforce and we are delighted to be able to add a further 1,000 to that number over the coming months. As we see greater demand, we are able to rapidly grow our talented team across the UK.”
The latest move from the retailer giant will increase its permanent workforce in Britain from existing 6,000 to around 7,000 across the company’s distribution centres in Doncaster, Dunfermline, Gourock, Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Rugeley and Swansea Bay. Regional breakup for the job additions still remains undisclosed.
The online retailer said that the new jobs would be full-time and applicants would start on an average £7.39 per hour and would be eligible to earn up to £8.90 per hour after a span of 24 months. The minimum wage for workers aged 21 or more is £6.50.
Amazon had also revamped the way its staff worked “for the benefit of its entire workforce”. Permanent staff now works four 10-hour shifts per week so they get three days off every week. The change meant employees would save both time and money. Permanent employees are also entitled to get private medical insurance, a company pension plan, life assurance and an employee discount.
The retailer is even planning for a new office in London which will house over 5,000 of its corporate employees in the UK when it gets opened in 2016.
